Maker Party, an international initiative sponsored by the Mozilla Foundation, unites educators, organisations, and enthusiastic technologists of all ages and skill levels to celebrate web literacy and maker culture. The event will feature interactive learning stations where “learners of all-ages can get hands-on with technology and collaborate with local organisation”s. Partners MakerBox, Wellington Makerspace, Fabriko, The Fedora Project, and Raroa Normal Intermediate will be on hand to share their knowledge with attendees.
Attendees will learn about:
- Mozilla, the charitable foundation responsible for the popular web browser, Firefox, and their innovative Webmaker toolkit.
- Creating electronic art with Fabriko, a maker community in Christchurch housed in MakerCrate:ChCh.
- The Raroa Normal Intermediate School and what their students have been creating this term with laser cutting, 3D printing, and upcycling.
- Creating sonic multimedia with Fedora Linux, the popular operating system developed by Red Hat.
- Programming with the Raspberry Pi, winner of the 2013 Royal Society of Engineering Silver Medal.
- Making mobile media, streaming and publishing from smartphones with Mohawk Media.
Jess Weichler, director of the Wellington Makerspace’s charitable programmes, said: “We want people to come and learn new skills, and see that science and technology is not only a great avenue toward job opportunities for their future, but also something fun and exciting that they can do, right now, with free or low-cost components that they probably already have around the house.”
