Microsoft has entered the TELA arena with two devices. Here we reveal everything you need to know about one of them, the Surface Laptop.

Out of the box, the stylish look and feel of the Surface Laptop is hard to ignore. This is one heck of an impressively-designed device – clean and elegant, luxurious, even.

The Platinum colour scheme of this machine is clean and easy on the eye. It’s surprisingly light, less than 1.3kg, and very thin. But that’s not as surprising as the covered keyboard – what Microsoft calls ‘Signature Alcantara’. Not only does it give a distinctive look but also it provides a soft palm rest that gives an unexpectedly high level of typing comfort.

The stereo speakers are discreetly hidden beneath the keyboard and deliver excellent omnidirectional sound with Dolby Audio.

As for overall balance, try this test: see if you can open it with one hand. It’s pretty easy … which equates to pretty good balance.

Performance and power

The 7^th Generation Intel Core i5-7300U processor pulls no punches – it breezes through daily tasks. The Solid State Drive (SSD) comes with 256GB storage and 8GB of memory.

The 13.5-inch PixelSense touchscreen gives clear and sharp resolution (2256  1504), while the Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protects the screen from knocks and bangs of everyday use. Also, the edge-to-edge display and ultra-thin bezel, give you the most room possible to see your work.

As for battery, it seems nice and strong, up to 14.5 hours according to Microsoft.

Versatility and multitasking

Something that’s imperative for the classroom, the Surface Laptop has versatility and capability to burn. The interactive touchscreen offers natural navigation, while the Surface Dial allows you to interact off screen with ease. Do more with advanced multitasking features like Snap, Task View and virtual desktops. Or transform it in seconds into a desktop PC with Surface Dock.

There’s plenty to admire about the Surface Laptop. It brings to the TEAL+ table – or desk in the case of a classroom environment – a high-performance yet truly versatile machine. Perhaps the best that Microsoft has to offer.
